Seriously! Removing browse by year increases the difficulty of browsing tenfold.

It used to be at:
http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?cat=Grateful%20Dead&PHPSESSID=ca94e3b0a080ce0230780c964ae3e79b

This page had a list of years from 1965 to 1995. Click on a year, and you used to get a list of the shows. It was very nice for browsing, comparing eras, etc. Removing this was a serious step backwards.

Try the new band search for Grateful Dead and you'll see just 30 listings. There were almost 3,000 yesterday. This is a frigging mess. These fools read a deluge of comments regarding proposed changes. They just went right ahead and made a big mess anyway. Our comments were just a waste of time...

shows are still there even though it says 30 on the page. If you go into the dead's listing page, there are still around 2800+ shows held on the servers.

If you look above on this page you will see a browse by year option. It is not quite as informative as the previous option was but it's the best we have now. The shows still seem to be all there, but there is no info on whether it is sbd, or aud.

It's not just "not quite as informative" it really blows compared to what we had. What a huge let down. I'm looking forward to the next "archive". Clearly the leadership and management and archive.org isn't up to the task.

You will find a "Source" field toggle in the options area on the right side of any search results page. And it should persist across browser sessions for you.

But why add the extra step? Was the source field getting in anyone's way? It used to be so easy to peruse the collection, It was all on one page, the layout was concise, informative and very easy to use. Now, some years are on 2-3 pages so it takes more time to find the show you are looking for and it is harder to just look through a particular year.

In addition, the old format was really easy to see, the colors were easy to distinguish and the information was laid out very clearly. Maybe it's because I'm older and my sight is not what it used to be, but the whole format is just not as clear to my eye and as easy to read, after 5 minutes or so, my eyes are strained. I personally liked the contrast of the Blue and black on white, it was much easier to read. I may be in the minority, but I know a lot of us Deadheads are in our 40's and 50's and i would be surprised if I was the only one with this issue.

It's a big-picture issue. The changeover we had brought the live music in line with all the material on the rest of the site- texts, movies, etc. All items on the site have a "description" field and this is what is sensible to display in the search results (for live shows, that happens to be the setlist).

Other items on the site do *not* typically have the *specialized* recording "source" field; that display toggle was built in later, especially for the peculiar needs of live music fans. In fact, in the new system the live music has already gotten a lot of extra engineering attention compared to some other material. So we should feel happy about that.

Just one more question, Diana, then I'll drop it. Is there some kind of technical issue with leaving the link that we had until a few days ago. I'm no computer whiz, so i don't know, but I was just wondering if that old link interfered in any way with the new format, and if it didn't why not leave it up for us old Heads who are so resistant to change...LOL?

Yes, it was a ghost of the past system, no longer updated and increasingly confusing to people now that there are 1000+ new shows since the switchover.

Thanks for pointing that out, Diana. It had slipped by me, hiding down there more than a screen down on the right.

Let me say that I admire your ability to field often ... um, heated shall we say ... comments and answer with grace and composure. And now for some whines/requests/suggestions :-)

1) would it be possible to put that 'source' toggle at the top of the right-hand column? that makes it easier to turn on sources, and also more obvious to those not knowing it's there (and for LMA, the only place it exists I gather, it's a crucial toggle).

2) Better yet, as Purple Gel suggested, could not 'on' be the default state? It has to default to something, right?

3) It would be neat to have a way to turn off the setlists (description field) and especially the 'downloads' and 'batting average' fields. They waste space on my screen, bandwidth, a few precious milliseconds of server time, and are distracting with little valuable info.

4) Having the 'source' is nice, but still not nearly as informative as the old display, which also had 'lineage', 'taped by' and (less important) 'transferred by' felds. It also had the 'Location' (city), while the new form has only the venue (theatre).

4a) I gather that these fields are to some extent flexible of definition and are filled out by the uploader. If there's no way to add lineage, etc, to the source fields when the toggle is on, is there any way to contact the original uploaders to have them tweak the fields to make 'source' more informative? E.g., sometimes the 'source' is a laconic 'audience', leaving the details to other fields, but other times (e.g. March 5 1981), a more informative "Audience recording sennheiser 421>D5 set up loge center".

Fortunately, paranoid that I am, I downloaded all the GD yearly display pages in the old format, and find that I can indeed use these and link to the individual show pages. I'm wondering if there's any way I can share these, as they are still very useful, at least for the GD (where the shows and collection are largely stable).

About the source toggle, it's already likely to be confusing to other Archive visitors, more info http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=63425

About obtaining more detail, particularly for the GD material, the uploaders here are *not* likely to be the taper or original seeder. Items were staged here by Grateful Dead Internet Archive Project participants after being obtained from more general circulation. Sometimes the info file is all we have. More notes on many filesets, plus "circulation date" estimates, may be found here: http://db.etree.org/shncirc/gd

The not knowing if it's a SBD or Aud Issue:
...this works for me using Windows XP Internet Explorer...
While your browsing shows, if you place your curser over the link title to that show without clicking on the link you can actually find out the source. While your curser is on the link, take a look at your information bar at the bottom of the browser window (you have to have this feature enabled) and it will show you the page link http address. In that address will be either sbd or aud MOST of the time I believe. Try it out, it works for me...or do what Diana said and toggle the source info.

Though I am a deadhead, have been since 1969, I listen to and download a multitude of other bands here.

The old way was perfect, easy to follow, organized for every use and never, in the years I have used it, given me any problems.

Now, this new way just makes me wanna mow the yard rather then browse or download any music.

Just bring it back the old way folks, they ruined the Hamburger by allowing McDonalds to run off the old mom and pop jouints, the old way works, the new way just dosen't!

Yep, I was as shocked as everyone else when I clicked my Archive bookmark and was directed to this page. After reading all the gripping and whinning I decided to see how difficult it was to search for shows. I had no difficulty. Do I like the old way better? You bet! But I am a creature of habit and forcing me to do something differently takes me out of my comfort zone for a while. I figure I can adjust.

Ever since the soundboards were pulled, half of what I read is negative, often angry if not plain mean spirited. I don't know about you, but for over a year I feel like I was gifted. As a result, I now have over 100 high quality hours of the best music ever recorded. Music I will never tire of. With the clck of my mouse, at any time I choose, I can sail into bliss, that part of heaven that only Jerry and the boys could go.

We really need to have "browse by year" for the Grateful Dead, just as it was before. It is so difficult to use the search facilities on archive.org, and the browse by year is the only sensible way of managing 3000 live concerts.

This absolutely must come back. Absolutely!

OK, the new "browse by year" is good. Thanks for pointing that out. Before, the resulting page from clicking on a link on the "browse by year" led to something other than a search result that we see now. On the left there was a content module for # of downloads, # reviews, and the center content module had information about the concert, songs, source, lineage, date, etc. Similar to what we have currently but laid out differently. Is this absent as a result of the new LMA architectural changes? For instance, I liked the fact that all of the concerts for the year was listed and not paginated, like the current version.
